Medieval Warrior: Be Your Own Knight In Shining Armor

Some are calling it "medieval." Others say it's the "Joan of Arc" trend.

We like to think of it as the trend most likely inspired by a string of pop culture phenomena like Kristen Stewart's Snow White remix and the HBO hit Game of Thrones.

But whatever you call it or however you think designers got it into their heads to reinterpret it, one thing is clear: strong women were strutting down fall runways with some serious heavy metal looks and accents, complete with gothic colors and details. If chivalry's dead, it's because these women killed it. And we're into it. Here are some of our favorite looks to inspire your inner warrior fashionista.

  • Cruci-Fix

Back in the day (like in the 15th century AD), both royalty and peasants were uber-religious. And really, as a fashion trend the crucifix look persists season after season. You'll never be hard pressed to find a necklace or ring that includes the symbol at any fast fashion retailer. We love the royal blue color of the cross-detail on this Versace number.

  • Corset Style

Corsets are sexy, plain and simple. Donatella took them from sexy bar-wench costume territory to high fashion heights. Between the gorgeous upside down parabola shape that calls to mind the demure sensibility of the middle ages and the studded bling details, we can't help but want to own one.

Old school jewelers didn't have the tools to cut and shape stones like they do today, perhaps that's why jewelry tended to be bigger and bolder? Or maybe they had access to the good stuff earlier on. Whatever the reason, big stones (whether real or fake) are an homage to Lords and Ladies.

The Bow-wowzer: Dogs model collars and coats

It is nearly time for Battersea Dogs Home’s annual Collars &amp Coats Dogwalk Gala, in which such glamorous style legends as David Gandy and The Telegraph’s former style director, Hilary Alexander, will play a portion alongside Jamie Cullum, who’s providing the cabaret (“That Old Black Magic Labrador”?), and Paul O’Grady and Amanda Holden, who have tendered their services as presenters.

Meanwhile, top rated designers which includes Stella McCartney, Stephen Jones, Matthew Williamson, Jenny Packham, Henry Holland and Julien Macdonald have developed doggy outfits which will be paraded before being auctioned off for the charity.

Canine couture: fashion’s largest designers team up for Battersea Cats &amp Dogs Home

It appears fittingly British that a dog charity need to draw such high-profile supporters. Much less British are the record numbers of animals being abandoned. Final year, Battersea alone cared for 5,941 dogs, with the common requiring 45 days to rehome. Quite a few animal charities are at total capacity. Even Battersea has a waiting list, although it pledges to take in all deserving cases.

Left to right : Colleen, a 4 -year-old Siberian Husky, wears coat by Julien Macdonald for Collars &amp Coats. Noodles a 3 to five -year-old Jack Russell Terrier cross, wears parka, £175, Mulberry mulberry.com. Maiya, a six to 12-month-old, wears cashmere coat, £129, Mungo &amp Maud mungoandmaud.com. Connor, a 3 to 5 -year-old ex-racing Greyhound, wears scarf, £12.95, Fab Dog at Harrods 020 7730 1234. Axle, a three to 5 -year-old Basset Hound, wears coat, by Hackett for Collars &amp Coats. Pauly, a seven to ten -year-old Staffie, wears coat, £59.95, Fab Dog at Harrods 020 7730 1234. Nevie, a seven-year-old Jack Russell, wears coat, £85, Like My Dog at Hair of the Dog hairofthedoglondon.com. Kizzy, a 1 to two-year-old Mongrel, wears jumper, £19.90, Benetton 0845 678 1813.

To bring this glamorous event to the world’s focus, our stylist Sophie agreed – at some point – to style the eight models you see before you. Colleen the husky ( at present a single of Battersea’s longest- stay residents, having been there considering that June), Noodles and co all had to pass stringent personality tests throughout their selection process, which included a clause about not peeing in the stylist’s Mulberry handbag. It would be unnecessarily humiliating to name these who breached this normal code of practice. Suffice to say that on the complete they behaved impeccably, even though it was tricky obtaining some of them to commit, because no sooner had we presented them the gig, then they identified new owners. Nonetheless, that is a happy outcome we had been glad to accommodate.

Speaking of humiliation, the Telegraph fashion group was profoundly struck by Anna Dello Russo’s canine observations recently. Asked regardless of whether she was ever tempted to style Cucciolina, her Chihuahua-esque lap dog in head-to-claw Roberto Cavalli, or any other designer for that matter, the famously flamboyant editor-at- big of Vogue Nippon was resolutely old-school. ” Definitely not. I feel dogs can sense when they are being made to appear ridiculous. So, even although Cucciolina knows almost everything about fashion (of course she does) and is sent lots of outfits, I don’t put her in them.”

Style designer Alexander McQueen left £50,000 to pet dogs

With this Attenborough-worthy sentiment in thoughts, we set forth on our edit. And what a task it was. Despite a four -year recession, the market place in pooch style is booming. It really is presently worth £30 million a year. You wouldn’t believe the bling and excess that got left on the cutting- space floor of the studio, like a furry wool coat shaped like two outsize hot-dog buns, specifically created for dachshunds. We feel the outfits that produced the cut a lot more or much less fit the sanity short. Nevertheless, if you still think it is immoral to spend £175 on a Mulberry parka for pooch, I can at least report – thanks to our ever resourceful fashion group – that it also works nicely on a size- 6 human.

Designers answer your pooch’s pressing style inquiries

1
” I am going to my 1st dog ball soon – what can I put on to make an outstanding entrance? What would suit my brown fur? And can I get away with a flowing gown ( I am 1ft 1inch)? Yours, Catrina the Corgi”
Catrina, getting the Queen’s favourite, you sound like a posh pooch, so I am positive your brown locks will appear fetching in a flowing gown. Pop your paws into some barking-mad heels to make an impressive entrance and make certain you are Hot Dog of the night !” Jenny Packham

2
“Hi, my name is Lola the Bulldog. I’ve got a what you’d get in touch with an “Apple” figure – heavy set in the stomach and bum. What can I put on that would make me look slimmer?”
“Dear Lola, I would suggest a tutu-style dog coat as this would accentuate your shape and give the illusion of a waist. Love Henry”
Henry Holland

three
“Deidre the King Charles Spaniel right here. I enjoy your hats Stephen, but I find my ears ever such a nuisance and get in the way of every topper I attempt. What would you recommend ?”
“I believe function with them, ears down, tail up! Just think Marianne Faithfull or Kate Moss, much less Grace Kelly or Rhianna. You are a groovy chick let your ears just go with the flow.”
Stephen Jones

four
” I am a fan of your pretty embroidered pieces Matthew – but I’m a boy dog. Can I get away with wearing embellishment or will I be a laughing stock?” Colin the Chihuahua
“Embellishments are a massive trend for the season, no matter if you happen to be a boy or girl, it does not matter – the a lot more sparkle the greater.”
Matthew Williamson

The Collars &amp Coats Gala Ball is on Thursday November eight at Battersea Evolution. Tickets commence from £350. All proceeds go to the Residence 020 7627 9309, collarsandcoats.org.uk

Beauty Blogger Of The Week: Lina Of Make Up To Make Out On Her Beauty Essentials

Beauty Blogger Of The Week: Lina Of Make Up To Make Out On Her Beauty Essentials | Grazia Beauty

London-based blogger Lina writes about everything from beauty and fashion to lifestyle and dating on her cheekily named blog Make Up To Make Out. If you’re looking for a personal take on latest product launches from a pint-sized lady with a keen fashion eye then check out our Q&A with the blogger, DJ and writer…

Grazia Daily: How long have you been blogging?

Lina: 4 years.

Grazia Daily: What made you decide to start your blog?

Lina: At the time I started, there was a distinct lack of good beauty blogs out there. As a consumer, one who consumed a hell of a lot in terms of beauty products, I would often try and find reviews and pictures of the product before purchasing. Unfortunately I seldom could, at best I’d find regurgitated press releases with stock photos that simply weren’t good enough for my needs. So I decided to start my own blog, I figured if I was looking for in-depth reviews and pictures before purchasing, others no doubt were too so there must be a demand for it. Plus, I bought so much make-up anyway I may as well put all that money wasted to some good use!

Grazia Daily: Which subjects do you particularly love blogging about?

Lina: Nothing gets me more excited than some really amazing make-up; like a lipstick that is the PERFECT orange, or an eyeliner that doesn’t budge from the waterline and lasts all day. Generally, anything that simply works is a joy to write about, good skincare or hair styling tools. I take the least pleasure from writing a bad review.

Grazia Daily: What’s been your highlight so far?

Lina: I was in Cosmopolitan and Company mag for a promotion with Max Factor a couple of years ago, which was pretty cool.

Grazia Daily: Are there any particular perks of blogging?

Lina: There are tons. The obvious perk is getting sent product to try, as any beauty enthusiast would find it a dream come true. Other perks are going to fancy events at swish hotels, meeting celebrities who are brand ambassadors, being taken to nice dinners at the best restaurants, spa treatments, etc.

Grazia Daily: What are your favourite beauty brands?

Lina: For Skincare; Olay, Murad, Dr. Lowe and Nip + Fab. For Make-up; Smashbox, Clinique, Nars, YSL and Bobbi Brown.

Grazia Daily: Blog brag time – why should people read your blog?

Lina: There are so many good blogs now, I genuinely wouldn’t know why! Haha. I guess if they want something that is a little bit more from a personal view point, about the blogger as well as the products featured – rather than churned out, super professional content that might lack the actual genuine consumer review part that made blogs so unique to begin with.

Grazia Daily: What advice do you have for anyone starting a blog?

Lina: Forget about freebies and perks for now, instead build on having a solid site with good, original content. If you work at it, all the other stuff will come. Lastly, while it might be tempting to emulate your favourite blog, the market is hugely oversaturated with blogs that all look and sound the same. By doing this your blog may look professional, but it also will be forgetful as people won’t be able to distinguish it from others designed similarly. Ultimately, be unique, be yourself, don’t conform, don’t sell out, don’t lose your integrity, and don’t forget the reason why you started. If you can do that, I’m sure your blog will be amazing.

Grazia Daily: Which other beauty blogs do you love?

Lina: Katie’s Beauty Blog for in-depth product reviews and extensive detail, Really Ree for variety and up to the minute information on all new beauty and Milkteef for high-end beauty brands which are photographed beautifully and clearly.
