The AMD Radeon HD 6470M is a middle class DirectX 11 graphics card for laptops. Its based on the Seymore-XT chip and is produced in 40nm. Like the faster one, the AMD Radeon 6490M, the HD 6470 features a 64 Bit memory bus for dedicated DDR3 and GDDR3 memory chips, but with slower DDR3 memory. It also features the UVD 3 video decoder.
Similar to the Radeon 5000 series, the HD 6470M still based on the same architecture, which consists of 120 stream processor. Though you can’t compare it with the 1D cores of current NVDIA GPUs in the terms of shader’s number. The comparable version of Radeon GPU should be like newer 6800 series or above. The Stream processors can be used with DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.1. General computations like transcoding videos also available by using DirectCompute 11 and OpenCL.
Comparable Graphics cards in terms of performance are the AMD HD 6370M (renamed 5470) and GT 320M from NVIDIA. Also HD 6470M’s average benchmarks never above the AMD HD 5650. Most of current games should be playable at the lowest setting.Decoding of MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, VC-1, MPEG-2, Flash and now also Multi-View Codec (MVC) and MPEG-4 part 2 (DivX, xVid) HD videos on the graphics card also supported by this graphic card, thanks to the new UVD 3 video decoder.
HD audio controller intregated allows us to transmit HD Audio (TrueHD or DTS Master Audio) over HDMI and DisplayPort (e.g. für Blu-Ray videos). Also Like the Nvidias 3D Vision the AMD HD3D Technology offers to support for Blu-Ray 3D and 3D displays (integrated and external). And Eyefinity for drive up to 4 monitors simultaneously (only when the notebook has enough output ports). Same as the old 5470M, the power consumption of HD 6470M is about 12-15 Watt depending on the used memory. Therefore, the GPU will mostly be used in 13-17″ laptops.
